morning cheer

Morgenfrisk

Some emotions are linked to particular moments in our schedules. A Friday feeling, for example, typically comes on a Friday, although it can occur at any other time characterized by changing expectations. The Finnish emotion of Morkkis tends to happen in the morning, because it’s something that follows a night of heavy drinking.

Morgenfrisk is another emotion that’s associated with the morning, though it has a much more cheery disposition than Morkkis. When a person is feeling morgenfrisk, they’re bright and chipper, feeling energetic because they’ve had a good night’s sleep, perhaps beginning with a bedgasm.

It’s a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed alternative to uhtceare, the feeling of dread people have when they’re facing the beginning of a day for which they feel unprepared.

The day may wear down our hopes, but for now, the enthusiasm is real.
