Jarred

This emotion has nothing to do with jars.

Instead, it has to do with the subjective state of mind that is aroused when we suddenly hear a harsh noise. It’s similar to feeling rattled, but without the sense of being grabbed and shaken.

There doesn’t have to literally be a jarring sound for us to feel jarred, of course. Images and ideas can be jarring. Still, the origin of the emotion is in sound. The jar is not a physical container, but the kind of sound that might provoke the experience of being jarred.

Imagine someone sneaking up behind you and unexpectedly shouting in a scratchy voice: Jarrrrrrrrr…. It’s not merely surprising. Everything seems to have been possessed by the coarse vibration, so that for at least a few moments, nothing else can be attended to. Our reaction is complete, and sensation itself seems to be split apart by the cacophony.
