nadryv

Nadryv

Nadryv is a Russian word that is difficult to translate because it refers to something that is, at first glance, inexplicable. Nadryv is an emotion that has been suppressed for so long that when it is finally released, it emerges in an exaggerated and distorted manner, at an inappropriate time.

The Nadryv is a consequence of prolonged emotional dishonesty with the world and one’s self. It’s an outburst that occurs only after a history of concealment. Nadryv appears to be nonsense to outside observers, because they cannot possibly grasp the long, convoluted journey of subjective self-distortion that has created it. It is a ripping apart of the fabric of a person’s emotional reality that seems sudden to others, though the destructive forces that cause it have been building, unseen, for quite some time.
